 Triage Table at Boillot

Lucien Boillot: Classic Gevrey Chambertin et al.

Here is a producer making pure, intense, traditionally structured reds that have an energy and style that is rare in Burgundy today.

Based in Gevrey Chambertin, but with vineyards in no less than 14 AOCs across the Côte d'Or, this is now a Domaine that is very much on form. Superb vineyard sites, minimalist winemaking and a remarkable percentage of old vines results in delicious, incredibly fruit pure, unpretentious reds. Regarding vine age; the oldest vines are now 95 years old, the 1er crus average 65 years and the whole Domaine averages over 50 years, i.e. this is very old and perhaps the oldest average age in the region! All the wines are made very naturally: no yeast additions, no fining or filtration, only new oak when a barrel needs replacing, etc. There is something of the old school here (in the best sense) in that the wines are unadorned by any overt winemaking influence and you have the intense aromatics and powdery tannins of classic Burgundy. What's more each wine brilliantly conveys the personality of its terroir and are reasonably priced. They are therefore a great addition to any cellar.

Barolo, Nebbiolo & Dolcetto d 'Alba from a superb producer has landed

One of our most exiting ''discoveries'' last year .
Founded in 1896, Massolino Winery, is based in and around the town of Serralunga, one of the prime sub-zones of the Barolo DOC. Massolino's vineyards occupy most of the greatest "crus" on the slopes of this sub zone. They own 16ha here, which includes the three "cru" vineyards of: Margheria, Parafada and Vigna Rionda. Due to the complex terrain in Serralunga, each of these vineyards has markedly different soil composition, exposure and micro-climate. The Massolino's were amongst the first producers in Barolo to understand the importance of processing their individual vineyards separately, allowing for the production of single vineyard "cru" wines. While they have introduced the careful use of smaller oak barriques for the aging of some of their single vineyard wines; the straight Barolo is aged in the traditional larger oak barrels.
